Trustees are generally elected in May to three-year terms. The chairman of the Board and president of the University are ex officio voting members of all standing committees. The president is a paid employee of the University.
A handful of people have run Colgate University for years: the members of the Executive Committee, with a policy-setting quorum of only four people; the members of the Nominating Committee, who select their rubber-stamped slate of Trustees in secret; the University president (also a member of the Executive Committee); and the dean of the college/provost; dean of the faculty. By name, they are: Dan Benton; Rebecca Chopp; Christopher Clifford; Denis Cronin; Howard Ellins; John Golden; David Hale; Margaret Flanagan; Adam Weinberg, former dean of the college; Lyle Roelofs, dean of the faculty.
